This resource is an overview of the literature on serious mental illness and risk of violence. While individuals living with a serious mental illness are more likely to be victims than perpetrators, those who do not engage in treatment are more likely than others to commit violence. Those with untreated illness and substance use disorders pose the greatest risk.
