Medications are often necessary for the treatment of schizophrenia. But there are many non-medication options and interventions that will help and improve care when used with medications. There is a type of therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis (“CBT for psychosis” or “CBTp”) which can be effective for some people. Peer support is also helpful and programs like the The Wellness Recovery Action Plan offer help to many. Exercise and healthy diet have also been shown to be useful in improving outcomes. Having a job and employment, or being in school, has also been shown to be very helpful. In summary – medications are often a necessary part of treatment but often only one part of a larger treatment package. There are more options than listed above and a good next step is to learn more via this resource or discuss with your treatment team.
