You may have been told that adherence to your medications is a cornerstone to your treatment. Unfortunately it is hard for some individuals to remember to take their medications or maybe they skip some because of unpleasant side effects. It is important for your care team to monitor your medication adherence so that they know when a medication is not leading to improvements for you. There are new ways to monitor your adherence by testing your urine. These technologies include confirmatory tests that use gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to specify which drugs and metabolites are present in your urine. Reference ranges are calculated, and these are highly correlated with serum levels that indicate the degree of medication adherence. Results are available within a few days and many community mental health clinics are now using this new technology.
