The Substance Abuse and Mental Health has Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines recovery as “a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.” This recovery includes optimizing elements of health, home, purpose, and community. Being in the recovery stage of a chronic illness is focused on maintaining wellness and consistency in one’s life. It is essential to make a plan toward wellness, including examining triggers and early warning signs indicating relapse into a state of illness.
