Serious mental illness (SMI) is a significant public health concern. The estimated economic impact of SMI is more than $300 billion each year.
The number of people that SMI affects is growing. Current data shows that more than 13 million adults in the U.S. experienced SMI in the past year. That is more than 5% of the adult population. And those 13 million adults live all across the country. This includes each of the four regions (Northeast, Midwest, South, and West) and across urban, suburban, and rural areas.
