What guidance is there regarding CPT codes for group therapy and delivery of services in group homes during COVID-19 “stay at home” orders?

The American Psychological Association has important information on providing group therapy using telehealth. This group psychotherapy telehealth CPT Code information is aimed at clinicians who are treating individuals in group homes or who want to foster group interaction for those individuals under “stay at home” orders.

There are two specific billing code sets for types of telehealth group therapies under the emergency guidelines for Medicare:

• Group Psychotherapy by Telehealth (CPT Code 90853), which, as of March 30, 2020, was added to the temporary emergency provision of services rules changes for Medicare.
• Health Behavior Assessment and Intervention Group codes (96164 and 96165).
