Most people with schizophrenia have psychotic symptoms that persist despite medication treatment. The severity of these symptoms, the extent to which they cause functional problems or distress, varies from mild to severe. Cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis (CBTp) has been proven to improve psychotic symptoms of people with schizophrenia who are being treated with antipsychotic medication. This is a structured psychotherapy that can be challenging to deliver appropriately. Successful provision of CBT for psychosis requires that clinicians be trained in delivering this evidence-based treatment. Guidelines recommend that patients with schizophrenia be treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy. More information about CBTp can be found here.
