This resource reviews urine drug screen testing and how to implement results into clinical practice. First, a review of the different types of drug screening modalities (urine, blood, saliva, hair ) are presented. Special emphasis is placed on understanding how to accurately interpret results from urine drug screens and how to deal with common false positive and false negatives (benzodiazpines, for example can produce both depending on the test’s sensitivity and specificity). Clinicians must know about the limitations of drug screening and how to identify and manage the possibility of alterations of samples and accepting the limits of drug screening in that it is not possible to test for all illicit substances. Drug screenings play a vital role in patient care and can help healthcare providers aid in diagnosis, document adherence and potentially identify diversion of a substance.
