How does the collaborative care model improve treatment access for people with substance use disorders?

The collaborative care model can help the primary care physician deliver systematic care for common mental health disorders including substance use disorders and the prescribing of medication assisted treatment.

The psychiatrist in a collaborative care team spends most of their time leveraging their expertise through indirect case reviews with the case manager and providing recommendations to the primary care provider (PCP). The PCP continues to retain the primary responsibility to diagnose and prescribe for the patient.
