For patients on MAT, how can behavioral treatment protocols be effective in supporting recovery?

The data suggests that combining psychosocial and medical interventions for patients with substance use disorders has an additive effect. Psychosocial interventions can increase adherence to Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and is effective for promoting abstinence and preventing relapse. Psychosocial interventions also provide a platform to educate patients and families about substance use disorders and the process of change.

Important components of effective interventions include skill building, competing reinforcements, listening to ambivalence, helping increase change talk and helping the individual build and utilize social support.

Cognitive behavioral function of analysis can be effective at addressing potential relapses, understand the predictability of one’s behavior and develop insights into the factors that may maintain their substance use.
