Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness (SMI) that causes dramatic shifts in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to think clearly. People who struggle with this disorder experience extreme high and low moods, known as mania and depression. These are vastly different from the typical moods most people experience and are difficult to manage, affecting daily functioning.
