Compensatory cognitive remediation approaches have been shown to help individuals with SMI improve cognitive functioning, so how can we increase this capacity in our clinical work force?

Cognitive Symptom Management and Rehabilitation Therapy (CogSMART) was designed to compensate for cognitive deficits by making modifications to the daily living environment of an individual with Serious Mental Illness (SMI). The approach provides individuals with skills, strategies, and tools to overcome problems with concentration, memory, organization, and problem-solving. The developer of CogSMART believes that this approach can be utilized by mental health professionals without a great deal of prior background or training. In fact, many front line professionals such as case managers, occupational therapists, rehabilitation therapists, social workers, masters level therapists, and other providers are well-suited for using CogSMART for individuals who have SMI. CogSMART is available free of charge. The developer, Elizabeth Twamley, Ph.D., recommends starting by logging on to the website, then downloading and carefully studying the CogSMART Manual and the website contents. The program includes 12 learning modules and can be used independently or with a trainer/therapist. In addition, Dr. Twamley will assist any provider who wants to learn CogSMART free of charge and can be contacted through the website.
