Antipsychotic Medication Continuation After Improvement in Schizophrenia

There are often questions regarding what to do regarding antipsychotic medication use after a patient’s psychotic symptoms have improved. In patients with schizophrenia whose symptoms have improved with antipsychotic medication, guidelines recommend that these patients continue to be treated with an antipsychotic medication. The goal is to prevent relapse or recurrence of psychotic symptoms. Guidelines also recommend that patients with schizophrenia whose symptoms have improved with an antipsychotic medication continue to be treated with the same antipsychotic medication. APA practice guidelines are found at: https://www.psychiatry.org/psychiatrists/practice/clinical-practice-guidelines.
