This webinar will provide an overview of cultural psychiatry. It will provide an overview of how mental health and its treatment varies across cultures and communities and provide insight into how psychiatry is viewed and accepted across different cultures. The presentation will also highlight how individuals with mental illness and their families/caregivers can be more effectively engaged in treatment.
Our Expert Presenter:
Dr. Maxie Gordon is a Board certified psychiatrist at East Mississippi State Hospital and the VA Medical Center in Jackson, MS. In addition, he operates an outpatient clinic at Hinds Behavioral Health center in Jackson MS, the largest urban behavioral health clinic in the state.
Dr. Gordon is an Honor graduate of Meharry Medical College in Nashville TN and completed a combined residency in Psychiatry and Internal Medicine in Greenville NC. He served as an assistant Professor and the founding director of the combined Medicine/ Psychiatry unit at the Brody School of Medicine. Dr. Gordon rose to the rank of Associate professor and served for 10 years as the director of medical student education at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine.
He has been twice recognized as teacher of the year and currently serves as president of the Mississippi Psychiatric Association.
