How can I better understand mental illness and how to respond to someone experiencing a crisis?

Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. Mental Health First Aid is for anyone who wants to learn about mental illness and substance use including risk factors and warning signs, strategies for how to help someone in crisis situations, and how to get someone help or resources. Topics covered include recovery and resiliency, stigma, depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis and substance use disorders. Studies show that people who participate in MHFA grow their knowledge of signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental illnesses and substance use issues, can identify resources for individuals with mental illness and substance use, and demonstrate confidence in how to help an individual in crisis. MHFA is managed and operated by the National Council on Behavioral Health and the Missouri Department of Mental Health. Visit the MHFA website for more information.
