Catatonia is a behavioral syndrome consisting of an inability to move despite the capacity to do so. This occurs in severely ill people with serious mental illness, including bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia. More information about the evaluation and management of catatonia can be found here. Research on the management of catatonia is limited. There is evidence supporting the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and benzodiazepines.
