The NIMH Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) was a large study comparing the effectiveness of different types of antipsychotic medications to treat schizophrenia. Many patients needed to switch medications in order to find one that relieved their symptoms and had manageable side effects. There was not much difference in treatment effectiveness across the medications, with the exception of clozapine, which appeared to be particularly helpful for patients who were not helped by one of the first-line treatments. The study’s findings highlighted the importance of your working with your prescriber to find a treatment that works best.
